Green Eggs and HamDinner with Daniel's WindowJust a few days before their big showcase at Gospel Music Week Ellen and I were given a sneak-peak behind Chicago area's Daniel's Window (DW). Prior to going on stage we all sat down together for fellowship and vegetable lasagna. During our conversations we discovered common ground as Heather and Caleb teach in a Montessori school as does Ellen. Ellen also offered the band encouragement as she reminisced about feeding the Newsboys sometime ago in the same teachers lounge we now ate in. After a quick meal the band headed back to the dressing room to prepare and we moved to the bleachers to get a good view. The crowd slowly poured in and accumulated to a nice sized gathering. I quickly noticed that the audience was of a very young age, mostly Jr. High students, some High Schoolers, and a good amount of parents. My first thought was how does a rock band such as DW adjust for such a young crowd. I was taken by surprise when the band took the stage and immediately had the young crowd involved in the show. After opening with a favorite from their previous release "It's a Mystery", DW went into what I would call a "wedding set" as they played oldies like YMCA, Celebration, and even Wipe Out. However nothing compared to when Heather sat down and sang out Dr. Sues' "Green Eggs and Ham." Their first release, "It's a Mystery," sounds a lot like Garbage (the band), but DW has since added something funky to the lineup. That being "Funky" the new DJ who adds a twist of hip-hop to the sound. Heather also explained that they use a lot of worship in their live shows. Music aside, DW has a history of working the youth circuit and after seeing them interact with this particular group I was convinced that they were doing something they loved, and were possibly called to do.
