Legacy... Hymns & Faith Amy Grant, once Christian music's leading star, finally returns to the music scene, and at the same time, returns to her roots, hymns. The first thought was that singing hymns would be so easy for Amy, and that this album was a filler; marketed to get Amy back into the light again. After watching the accompanying special edition DVD, it's evident that recording "Legacy" was not an easy task. A lot of devotion and workmanship went into creating this record. This project involved many musicians including an orchestra and choir, and involvement of artists including Brown Banister, Vince Gill, Ronn Hoff, and Keith Thomas. "Legacy" is a celebration of Amy Grant's roots. She has been recording for twenty five years, and desired to share the songs that have enriched her soul since the very beginning. Amy gets back in touch with her child-like faith by singing the hymns which taught her so much while growing up. "Legacy" is a double edge sword. While Amy regroups personally, she also exposes a new generation to the traditional form of worship music. There is great talent in the song crafting of these hymns. Each one is uniquely arranged, and the beauty of these great hymns shines through. Simple and tender is the well-known "This is My Father's World". "My Jesus I love Thee" is flavored with an Irish touch. "Softly and Tenderly" has an earthy feel adorned with Amy's peaceful voice. Vince Gill arranged many of the songs and his country influence comes through very strongly. "What Can Wash Away My Sin" has that country taste along with a gospel feel. Amy has also included songs she has personally written, such as, "What You Already Own", and "Do You Remember the Time", about her walk and finding true hope. It's so refreshing to see someone bringing back the beauty of these precious hymns. They are so full of wisdom, joy and comfort. They are a gift that nourishes the soul. If anything, "Legacy" has the potential to revive this classic method of singing of God's grace and the sacrifice of Christ. We would be most fortunate if this will spark off the same response as Third Day and SonicFlood have done with Modern Worship. I think both fans and critics will find this project uplifting and inspiring. It is soul quenching, from a living legacy who has been through the trenches and back again. On a personal note, thank you Amy for venturing back and encouraging us all. - Ellen E. |
