Sanctus Real has been remarkably successful right out of the gates with their label debut “Say It Loud.” However, I didn’t find anything that distinguished them from other rock bands. I don’t want to discredit their achievements because they are very impressive; winning a “Best Band” contest sponsored by a top commercial radio station, three independent releases, and a sweet deal with Sparrow Records. I just haven’t caught the “Real” fever yet. The rock riffs and melodies are graceful and solid but to some extent standard and mundane.

My favorite track was the last track on the album called “After Today,” as it dug into my thoughts with a soft melody and great lyrics. To paraphrase, God is in control and He has a plan, praise God.

It’s possible that a big part of their success is the fan base established while touring and recording independently, as well as touring on the 2002 Festival Con Dios tour. The band will join up with the OC Supertones, Relient K, Pillar, and John Reuben on the “See Spot Rock” tour in 2003.
