Sometimes life takes us by surprise, but maybe it’s not such a surprise that Joy Williams has tried to expand her abilities on her latest project “By Surprise.” This progression is obvious in the fact that Joy was more involved in the writing of songs. Additionally the album leans more towards pop-rock than dance-pop. However, this change, or expansion, isn’t all that agreeable and at times it’s a set back.

On a positive note the title track, “By Surprise,” is a gritty rock tune in the likes of Jennifer Knapp or Katy Hudson. “New Day” is also a step forward as it’s upbeat and Joy displays a strong pop-rock spirit. You can also appreciate the truer band sound compared to the programming of her debut, but many of the songs only touch on Joy’s tremendous vocal abilities.

These vocal abilities (gifts) and her developing writing skills will carry her through to the future, but for now I’m left a bit surprised and disappointed.
