Who Are We?

Barlow Girl
Fervent Records

If the name sounds familiar, you're correct. These are the young women who inspired the Superchic[k] song of the same name. BarlowGirl are sisters Rebecca, Alyssa and Lauren Barlow. Fervent Records CEO Susan Riley says "They are incredible young ladies who will be great role models for girls, but will also find fans among guys as well."

Add this "guy" as a fan. These ladies rock on their debut album. From the opening guitars on "On My Own" to the pounding drums on "Pedestal," BarlowGirl is not a throwback to the 60s girls groups, but more in tune musically with The Go-Go's. But that's where the comparison ends. That's because BarlowGirl has as its mission to "rock their generation with messages of faith, hope and living in God's perfect way."

In other words, this band would not have received an invitation to perform at this year's Super Bore half-slime show.

The band does have a softer side. "Never Alone" is the requisite power ballad, while "You Led Me" would fit right in on a Nicole Nordeman CD, only with harmonies.

BarlowGirl write songs that matter. "Mirror" is about body image and how we need to remember that we all are made in God's image. "Clothes" recognizes that we live in a culture where "modesty is out the door." Amen. "She Walked Away" has a prodigal theme and is about a run-away.

Don't be surprised when BarlowGirl winds up with a Dove Award nomination for "Best New Artist" next year.
