The Passion

The Passion of the Christ
Universal South Records
UMG Soundtracks

I don't understand the point of this particular "soundtrack." The cover claims its "Songs Inspired By." Elvis Presley has a song on this disk and there's also a song written by Hank Williams. I'm sorry but Elvis died over 25 years ago and Hank has been gone longer than that. These songs are hardly "inspired by" the film.

The linear notes thank "all of the great artists who lent us their songs and talent to honor it." Ouch. I thought all glory and honor went to God, not a film.

Don't get me wrong. There are some great songs here, mostly inspirational and gospel songs: "How Can You Refuse Him Now," "Precious Lord," "Ave Marie." "Passion" director Mel Gibson pens linear notes for each song, but the songs seem to be selected because Gibson likes them.

I don't have a problem with Mr. Gibson's taste in music as represented here, but packaging and linking these songs to the film (I'm sorry but Elvis cannot be heard during the movie) smacks of cashing in. You know the DVD will be out in time for Christmas, so where are the action figures?
