Testament

L. Spenser Smith & Testament
Assignment No. 1
Emtro Gospel Records
52:56 TRT

This 20-voice ensemble from Tuscaloosa, AL, describes its signature sound as “neo-soul.” Six of the 14 tracks on this debut easily fall into that category.

The group displays some versatility. “Under My Feet” opens with a rap from BB Jay while “Nobody Like Ya” has a Latin feel. The too-brief “Interlude-Thank You” drifts into funk. The HONCHO Hornz appear on several tracks, making for an interesting listen. “That’s Our Praise” might remind a few of you of Earth Wind and Fire, while “Give Thanks,” with its rousing horns introduction will have you off of your feet. Kevin Bennett gives an excellent lead performance on this track.

The weakest track is the opening “Out the Box.” While the choir is in great form the entire lead vocals are done with electronic distortion, the current musical cliché.

John Jackson is the producer. He also serves as the musical director and keyboard player for Ruben Studdard of American Idol fame.

If you enjoy African-American gospel music, you should appreciate this disk.
