Independent Spotlight - Athena
Independent artist Athena, while only in her early 20's, has released two CD's on the Just'n Angel label. Her amazing voice has been compared to the likes of Mariah Carey, and her voice is the cornerstone of her many talents.
On her first release titled “Grateful”, Athena wrote, arranged, and co-produced the majority of the songs. The overall style of “Grateful” is mainly R&B and gospel orientated. Two tracks, though, the title-track and the track “Temptation”, have a dance beat, but still fit in well. On “The Power of God”, the musical focus is on her strong vocals, which come across with great feeling. Two of the best songs on the CD are less R&B and softer and inspirational. The first is Athena's own ballad called “It Should've Been Me” and the second is the hymn “I Surrender All.”
This leads to Athena's second CD titled “Hymns – Book 1”, on which Athena sings her favorite hymns. Compared to her first album, this is a very traditional recording, as all of the arrangements are done with just the piano and Athena. Some of the hymns included on the CD are “Jesus Loves Me”, “Rock of Ages”, and “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”. There is also a beautiful medley of “What a Friend We Have In Jesus/His Eye is on the Sparrow.”
Athena embraces the traditions of the past, but looks to the future of her R&B gospel career. With her talented vocals and abilities to write and produce she has a good foundation for a promising career.
