Devotion
Sparrow Records

Presently, I'm reading a book called “Adventures in Missing the Point” by Brian D. McLaren and Tony Campolo, and that's how it feels now to listen to “Devotion.” On their last worship CD, “Adoration”, I gave the Newsboys a very flaming review. When I first listened to “Devotion”, I felt the same contempt for modern worship than I had with “Adoration” and many other modern-worship releases. After reading Peter Furler's Q & A from the bio sheet I began to think differently.

After nearly 17 years of recording and touring, the Newsboys had reached the status of Christian stardom marked by huge rock productions, sell out crowds, and huge sales. All of this glitter can be blinding, and lead to separation from the purpose. “Devotion” marks a turning point for the members of the Newsboys, a spiritual renaissance where they are recommitting themselves to God, family, and church.

I discovered that “Devotion” wasn't too far off of what the Newsboys were all along. “Presence” has that same harmonizing chorus like “Entertaining Angels”. “Blessed Be Your Name” (a duet with Rebecca St. James) and “Devotion” have many of the elements of the customary Newsboys as well. I also found a new love for praise and worship in songs like “Landslide of Love” and “ Strong Tower ”.

“Devotion” is book-ended by two very important characteristics of a humble heart, beginning with the title track which speaks of love and devotion, and ending with “When the Tears Fall”, which speaks of trust, faith, and the transcending peace of God.

“Devotion” has, through my heart and mind, opened my ears to a renewed belief in modern praise and worship.
