Stephen Hurd This new project from worship leader/songwriter Stephen Hurd was recorded live at Hurd’s home church, First Baptist Church of Glenarden, Maryland. It features 11 songs (two of the tracks are reprises) of worship and praise in the modern Gospel sound. Hurd has studied at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts (note-if you can find a copy of Duke Ellington’s "Concert of Sacred Music" from the 1960s-snap it up!) and the Howard University College of Fine Arts. According to his PR materials, Hurd says he hopes this record will impact people of every race and many different nationalities. I’m praying people come to fellowship in the presence of the Lord in a fresher way." The record delivers on his intent. The opening track "Let It Rise" features an uplifting full choir and horns. "Cry Out O Zion" has a similar approach only with a rousing call and respond. My wife said "they sure go wild." She meant that in a positive manner. The soulful "Lead Me to the Rock" is an original composition. "Lead me to the rock that’s higher than I." I grew up in a pretty traditional Lutheran church. I remember seeing my first "modern Gospel" group on the old "Flip Wilson Show," and thinking, "Wow. You can do that? How cool is that!" Until this disk, I had not heard of Matt Redman’s "Undignified." It’s awesome! "I will dance I will sing, and be crazy for my king." I should play it for my more traditional brethren. Loosen up people! A great record. Recommended. - Rob S. |
