Olivia The Band Now that Green Day has legitimized “pop punk” with six Grammy nominations, it should come as no surprise that yet another CCM pop punk band comes along with a debut record. CCM does have a tendency to release music in genres that are “the flavor of the moment” in secular music. It’s often playing it safe. And I still think “pop punk” is an oxymoron. Did pop punk mutate from the “power pop” of the 70s? Any way, musically there are not any tricks on this record, just straight rock. However, lyrically the band has a few more things to say about the Lord than other similar sounding bands. Opening track “Stars & Stripes” has a reference to Isaiah 53:5. “Along the Way” explores the topic of doubt but also admits “Worries, cares, and fears are all left miles behind when I think of what Your Son did. . . .” While there are no citations of Bible verses, the mellow “Heaven” seems to be inspired by Revelations chapter 5 and Romans 14:11. The first single “Shut It Out” is about surrendering one’s self to God. “Got it under control don’t need your help.” Then later, “You got it under control, Lord, I need your help.” “Look to the Stars” refers to Matthew 6:19-21 and where our treasures are. “Kid Innocence” is a strong ode to growing up. “Spending on me myself and I, Can’t help but feel I’ve wasted my time.” That’s a pretty mature outlook. “Missing” has some great old school harmonies that remind me of Crosby, Stills, and Nash (ask your parents). This is a band with something to say. Recommended. - Rob S. |
