Superchick

Superchick
Beauty from Pain
Inpop Records

This is an amazing CD that totally blew away my expectations and pre-conceived notions. As a not-so-teen-aged-male I’ve kept a safe distance from prior Superchick releases. I’ve liked them, but they didn’t get a prime spot in the CD carousel. They were reserved for car rides with the daughter more than anything.

Right from the first progression of guitar chords in “Anthem” I was hooked. Besides the obvious in-your-face lyrics, I took delight in the catchy pop-punk vocals and crashing drums. I was further impressed with the Earthsuit-like song “Pure”, which fits the bands message throughout the album, which is heavily based on relationships. Not all the songs are on such a serious note, particularly “Bowling Ball” which takes a more whimsical approach to bad relationships – “You need that boy, like a bowling ball, dropped on your head, which means not at all”. Adding a little diversity, TobyMac joins Superchick on “Down From the Bottom” (Stories) which is also on TobyMac’s latest release, “Welcome to Diverse City”.

All fun and games aside, the album truly shines on the ballad “Beauty from Pain”. The depth and seriousness of the tormented lyrics gives me shivers. The Brock sisters somberly harmonize in one beautiful voice, with a gentle piano background. The comforting resonance of “Beauty From Pain” reminds me a lot of Serene & Pearl’s post Considering Lily music. This is the one song that really blew me away and made me realize that Superchick was a serious contender, with a serious message to share.

“Beauty From Pain” has been birthed from personal experiences within the band, and their personal investment in making the recording the best it can be is commendable. With this album, the band has reached beyond the surface and into the agonies that are a part of growing up. The CD delivers a powerful message that’s hopeful and encouraging.
