After releasing a couple of records for Forefront, including the well-regarded Now the News, eLi is now an independent recording artist. His current release, Gratitude, is a record worth tracking down.

The production values are simple and understated; most of the songs are driven by an acoustic guitar, with an occasional backing chorus. Fans of Bebo Norman and Andrew Peterson will appreciate this record.

“I Am Your Fire” is about looking for meaning and joy in life. “When will you understand, I’m the one who lends a hand?” “Hide and Seek” follows a similar theme and even manages to work in the line “ollie ollie oxen free”

“Only Heaven Knows” addresses the “why?” of life. Sometimes, there are no answers to be found in this world.

“Gratitude” is an intriguing rumination on recognizing one’s shortcomings, “I could have used a friend, I’m sure I used a few,” but ultimately we can redeem ourselves, “you turned this stagnant heart of water into wine,” when we surrender all to the Lord.
