Farewell June

Farewell June
1939
Whiplash Records

Farewell June is a six-member ensemble with contrast between singer/songwriter James Taylor and Casting Crowns. Their debut album 1939 has a light cadence that is marked with an exceedingly acoustic foundation, and an occasional departure to more of a Dave Matthews type rock.

“Shine On”, for example, is a simple acoustic song about past mistakes. On the other side is “Take Shelter”, which has a mellow tone with subtle but skillful guitar leads that build up to a beautiful chorus and a climactic ending. Although labeled an “organic pop” band, Farwell June crosses lines with modern worship on more than one occasion. The song “Welcome Home” is a great example of this transition.

I have not really picked up on the Casting Crowns frenzy, but I think that Farwell June has many of the same qualities. I’ve found that the natural acoustic nature of the album, and the harmonic chorus’ have made this an emotive CD. Additionally, the subtle beat of the drumming and the occasional blues-ish guitar leads add further character. This is an album that I can really dig into and enjoy at the same time.
