Jason Upton

Jason Upton
Great River Road
Gotee Records

When Faith was released back in 2001 I was totally mesmerized by Jason’s passion. Faith was an album that moved me in such a way that I couldn’t even put into words. Now, nearly four years, and a few independent releases later, Jason Upton again returns to Gotee with Great River Road. Yet again I’m at a loss for words. How is it that a recording can capture such passion and emotion?

Drawing from his background of adoption, and his Native American heritage, Jason explores this avenue lyrically and musically. Upton incorporates chants and Native American instruments into his unique style of expressive verbalization through song. It all has a very chilling effect on my senses, especially on the title track. Jason is singing about how he was saved from abortion, and how it exposes his heart to the listener.

Great River Road contains four new songs, and several previously released songs. The new songs include “Return to Me”, Chop Down the Tree”, “Trust Once More”, and “The Kings Way”. Jason has before been compared to Keith Green, and again on Great River Road there are some similarities. Included on the CD is Jason’s tribute version of “You Are the One”, this was written and recorded by the late Keith Green.

To say that I’m a “fan” of Jason Upton would diminish the whole intent of his purpose I’m sure, but I feel very fortunate that he has even taken the time for a commercial recording.
