Josh Turner
Your Man
MCA Nashville

The train is rolling back into town, as Josh Turner returns with his sophomore release, Your Man. I know that there is a lot of good country music out there, but on this site we typically do not review much of it. However, in Josh’s case, I love the nostalgic sound that emits from his baritone vocals and traditional instrumentals that make up the majority of his songs. The duet with John Anderson, “White Noise,” is the epitome of what I think of as traditional country.

Josh has either written or co-written on at least half of this project, and the CD gracefully traverses from the whimsical “White Noise,” to the sedated “No Rush,” and finally the Country-Gospel flavored “Me and God.” The CD is closed out by another prime example of Josh’s traditional roots with the song “Way Down South.”

I guess what I like most about Josh Turner, is that he stirs up some good memories of younger days, days when I was attending Kiss concerts, but still I was a closet country fan of Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and John Anderson to name a few. These are things that I would never have let my father know, as he “forced” us to listen to “his music, in his house.” Aside from that, I like the honest message of the Gospel that Turner also puts into his work. It is not uncommon for country music to cross paths with the gospel message, but to me, there is a sense of sincerity in Josh’s music and it is not just another hook to push a song.
