Jessie Daniels

Jessie Daniels
Self-Titled
Midas Records

Jessie Daniels is a young artist that I have been watching since I reviewed her first EP back in 2004.  At the time, the popularity of Disney-pop stars being promoted through Disney Radio was just starting to surge.  I watched – and reviewed – as several young artists came and went.  I manage to keep track of a few through the web, but many, including Jessie Daniels, appeared to be in limbo for a while.  So when Jessie’s name came up again, and an interview was offered, I was happy to oblige.

Jessie’s Midas Records debut gives us an indication of where she has been and where she is going.  To some degree, this is a new sound for Jessie, and although I don’t hear that edge that I got from songs like “Long Before the Sun” on her 2004 EP, I still find that this CD has much potential.  I can’t really know what was going on in the background, but it seems that the producers were playing it safe with a more radio-friendly sound this time around. However, that isn’t to say there are not some shining moments on the new CD.

I particularly like how she lets go (pun-pun) on “Letting Me Go,” a song that highlights her vocal energy and emotion. Additionally, I have heard the single “The Noise” on the radio and I think it sounds great.  The message is also very cool and I have to give her props on that as well.  The song selection for this CD does depart from the radio Disney pop and lean more towards the CCM market. For an example all you have to do is listen to “Hold Me Know” as Daniels shares her testimony of coming to know Christ as Savior.

When looking at the credits it appears that Jessie herself had a lot to do helping to write the majority of the materials on the CD.  That too is a good indication that this young artist is going to be “one to watch.”  I myself am looking forward to the first opportunity to see her live in concert.
