Classical Praise

“Best of”

Discovery House Music

11 @ 39:11

This disk is a compilation of songs from the four CD series “Classical Praise” issued by Discovery House Music.  The songs are primarily traditional hymns, reworked in an instrumental setting.  Individual volumes in this series feature “Solo Piano,” “Piano and Violin,” “Piano and Cello,” and “String Quartet.”

The just-released volume five has more contemporary songs, while the main instrument is the 10-string lute, a favored instrument in the court of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

I really liked the “Best of” disk.  The renditions of hymns such as “Be Thou My Vision” and “It Is Well With My Soul” remain faithful, yet subdued.  In fact, this may have been the most understated version of Luther’s “Mighty Fortress” that I have ever heard.  Having been raised in the Lutheran tradition, and thus getting to hear that song pounded out on a huge pipe organ every year on Reformation Sunday, I did, quite frankly, enjoy this low-key presentation.

This is a wonderful set of music for use during daily devotions, mediation, or for those all-too-rare quite times.  Each CD is available individually.
