Jars of Clay Good Monsters Essential Records
The latest album from the famed Jars of Clay has already been named album of the year by CCM magazine. After thirteen years as a band, Jars of Clay has not ceased to have an impact in the Christian music genre. From the college favorite, “Flood,” on their self-titled debut, to the hymn project, “Redemption Songs,” they have always strived to make great music.
The press materials describe how the band took an unorthodox approach to recording, going retro and recording the whole CD live in the studio together as a band. Reportedly the song “Oh My God” was recorded in one take! Not an easy task. The sound goes back to days when bands sounded more organic. In some ways the new CD reminds me of REM’s more obscure workings.
My favorites are the lighter tracks like “Even Angles Cry,” “Surprise,” and “Oh My God.” However, the new wave infused “Monsters” is a good song too and little more upbeat. The theme behind the title track concerns the monster that is inside of us all, the sin nature of human life. The lyrics are introspective as apposed to chastising as the band opens themselves transparently through out the album.
It’s also important to note the bands involvement with relief work in Africa. The song “Light Gives Heat” ties into their labors and it features the voices of the African Children’s Choir. For more information on the bands relief work check out www.bloodwatermission.com.
