Falling Up Grade: C+ Exit > Lights BEC
Falling Up has previously released two stellar albums and has, in a short time, become a favored rock band. Their latest release, back in September of ’06, is a remix album that features a new flavor of instrumentation that the band is working into their sound. The first track, “ Islander” is actually a new track, which gives you a good indication of where the change is taking the band.
Usually I am not a big fan of remix albums, however “Exit > Lights” is not like most other remix albums. The new mixes actually work better and I like the new sound. The usual downfall of remix albums is an over-done production and I don’t find that to be the case with this CD.
The new mixes on “Exit > Lights” are extremely creative and for the fans it has most likely been added to their collection already. However, it is still a remix of old material with just one new song, and a few features (Rachael Lampa, Solomon Olds, and Trevor McNevan). For that reason, I think the benefit of the album is a taste of where they are heading and not so much as a catalyst for building a new or larger fan base.
