Foolish Things                                                                        Grade: B

“Let’s Not Forget the Story”

Inpop Records

11 tracks @ 46:01

This Colorado-based band’s moniker comes from 1 Corinthians: 27 and 29.  Foolish Things won the Gospel Music Association’s Estes Park “Seminar in the Rockies” talent competition in 2000.

Bassist Nate Phillips says, “We have absolutely nothing to boast about.  We never set out to do the band thing.  We’re just a group of friends who wanted to serve our youth group.”

You’ll catch some influences from Chris Tomlin, Sanctus Real and delirious? in this pop rock debut.

Phillips says, “From the beginning, we’ve used music as a tool to strengthen and challenge the body of Christ, as well as to reach out to the lost.”  The band doesn’t site any scriptural influences for their songs but the lyrics are not overly generic either.  I thought “The First Lie” was one of the band’s stronger pieces.

“It’s Not Home” is another strong song.  Vocalist Isaac Jorgensen says, “The life of a Christian should be strange to the world because it’s based on citizenship in heaven instead of this earth.  When I look at my life, I’m convicted to see how little difference there is between myself and a non-believer because I’m still investing much of my time and money into empty, temporary things that will pass away”

I really liked the band’s “God’s Offer to You” witness in the linear notes.

I’d like to use this review to give a shootout to the band’s publicist, Mandy Collinger of Savy Media Solutions.  There are many uncredited “behind the scenes” people in the music industry.  The review disk came with a ton of background info that helped me understand where the band is coming from.
