The Blackstones

The Blackstones EP

Independent
Grade: B

The Blackstones are an independent band formerly out of Longview, WA, but now apparently relocating to the Nashville, TN area. There is something particularly cool about the Western United States music scene that I find to be of interest.  Bands like The Listening (formerly the Rock and Roll Worship Circus), The Violet Burning, as well as The Blackstones, and several others in the western time zone, have been creating a distinctive vibe of gospel music that is both intriguing and entertaining.  Hopefully the exodus to the Nashville area does not inhibit the creativity I have witnessed thus far as members of both the Blackstones and The Listening have relocated recently.

This is really the third Blackstones release I have had the pleasure to preview.  The first was under the name of The Tremelo Cowboys, and the second was “The Legend of Simon Peter.”  As with their previous releases, there is a no compromise approach to making good music with a strong message, while at the same time avoiding all things commercial.  The EP is a blend of rhythmic guitar leads and surreal vocals that create a trance like state for worship and reflection.  It is highly creative with a complex tapestry of sounds that are very pleasing.  I can highly recommend taking the time to check them out on the web.
