Brian Doerksen “Holy God” Integrity Music 16 tracks @ 67:08 Grade = A
I was a little disappointed when I didn’t receive any press material for this release. I often use that material to understand the artist and their goals through their music. I can also share some of that “insider” information with you.
Then I popped the disk into my boombox, pulled open the linear notes and went “oh wow.” Brian provides a detailed explanation behind every song. That’s a pinch pricey for the record label but for the listener a real benefit.
For example, the inspiration for the title track is the Book of Revelation, where Brian writes, “It describes the worship that is constantly going on in heaven.” Such insight will be a rare treat for most listeners.
“Our Father in Heaven” is Brian’s musical interpretation of The Lord’s Prayer. He refers to “I Don’t Need Anything But You” as his “anti-advertising” song. “Change Me on the Inside” features an excellent duet with Joseph Williams, former lead singer for Toto during the late 1980s.
Be forewarned that stylistically, this disk is not Hillsong-like in nature. In fact, it’s not until track seven that the music becomes heppy-peppy. I do not see that as a drawback.
This is an excellent worship record and may wind up as one of the year’s best releases. I still can’t get over the informative linear notes.
