“Who puts rock ‘n’ roll in your blood?”  Not only is that an excellent question but it’s also the title of one of the songs on The Elms third full-length record.  This is one of the best straight-up rock records that I have heard in some time.  The musicianship is superior.

At one time The Elms were with Sparrow Records.  I’ve seen them perform twice at Lifest where I was blown away by their first show.  No less than ChristianityToday.com has named The Elms one of the most “improved” artists for 2006.

I say all of this because I’m reminded of the time when I was doing a presentation to a confirmation class on CCM.  At one point the pastor asked me, “Where’s God in all of this?”  It’s that on-going debate over just what exactly is Christian music?  If God isn’t mentioned, is it a Christian song?

Ultimately, God is concerned with our hearts, not our appearances. It doesn’t matter what our stage or platform is, we’re to let His light shine.  Therefore, would a non-Christian be able to know that The Elms are followers of Christ?  Based on the lyrics in this record, it’s not going to be easy.

I respect the point-of-view of many who believe that Christian artists should be uplifting Christ in their music.  I believe there is legitimacy to that viewpoint.  That’s why I’ve given this disk two grades.  It’s a great rock record, as a Christian rock record it will fall short for many.  I, however, will continue to play it.  Not to boast, but I’ll continue to listen to this band because I have some sense of where they’re coming from.  I would suggest that you can make a better decision about whether or not you want to listen to this band by checking out some of the insightful writing on www.ChristianityToday.com.  Search “The Elms.”
