PlayRadioPlay The Frequency EP Stolen Transmission Grade - B
PlayRadioPlay is a fusion of electronic and pop, as if Joy Electric was fused with The Rocket Summer. Much like these two references, Dan Hunter, the brainchild of PlayRadioPlay, creates and plays all the music himself on the recording.
Hunter, according to his MySpace site, is a self-proclaimed Christian hippy that loves to make music. At 17 years old he is already well established as an artist and is currently working on a full-length project to be released on Island/Stolen Transmission. Hunter also took part in the Vans Warped Tour this past summer.
The Frequency EP is a sweet little preface to the full-length album in the making. It’s sure to stimulate the techo-geeks and even get those of us to tight to loosen up a bit. Although techo, in my mind, is not usually laden with deep subjects, Hunter’s approach is a bit different. Having experienced tragic losses and hard living just within a few years of this release, Hunter goes deep, and as he explains, “PlayRadioPlay is generally happy music with deep, not-as-happy subject lines.”
