Matt Maher
Empty & Beautiful
Essential Records
Grade – C+

Matt Maher was born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada where he grew up with an influential base of music. Matt’s family life growing up however was not all jazz and rock –n- roll. In 1995 Matt’s parents were divorced and eventually Matt moved to Arizona with his mother who was a US citizen prior to marrying. In Arizona,Matt’s spiritual life continued to go through a refining process resulting in a gradual change of heart. As Matt was mentored and eventually led to Christ, he developed a closer relationship with God that shines through in his songwriting.

An interesting turning point for Matt was when he was asked to work with Rich Mullins on a production of Mullins’ “Canticle of The Plains.” Matt played the part of Ivory, a piano player making his way in life by playing lounges – something that Matt had experience with personally.

The style of music on “Empty & Beautiful” is fittingly labeled as corporate worship. I immediately recognized a few of the songs from Sunday morning worship. Matt is an excellent writer and the depth of his writing helps to make this a respectable worship album. I do however think that it best fits in the realm of congregational worship or inspirational radio programming. With his experience and talents, I am positive that we will be hearing more of his work on Sunday mornings for sure.
