Alvin Slaughter Alvin Slaughter’s goal is spiritual empowerment. He’s overcome the effects of bankruptcy, foreclosure, welfare, low self-esteem and a troubled marriage. “This is a new day,” Slaughter says. “Too many people still live their lives just holding on, living in the past or walking in fear. “Holding on is an exercise in futility. If your life is stuck in neutral, you need to forget about ‘just holding on’ and start ‘pulling up’ from out of the pit you’re in.” He’s received numerous Dove Award nominations ovr his career, including Contemporary Gospel Album and Contemporary Black Gospel Song of the year. The Shaft-like open to the first track “O Give Praise” will grab your attention. I loved the bass work on “Mighty Praise” while “He Loved Me to the End,” with its drums up front approach, builds to a wonderful extended climax. I also liked the funky bass and pinch of disco strings on the listening feast “I Will Not Be Afraid.” The lyrics aren’t necessarily profound but grounded in Biblical truth. This release is typical for the genre, with a fair amount of repetition in the verses. There are several ballads here, which at times, I struggled to make it all the through. - Rob S. |
