Beloved This Atlanta-based trio reminds me of Point of Grace on their national debut. Nine of the eleven songs were written by the group. I really liked the few up-tempo numbers including the rock-tinged “I Dare You.” There are a variety of musical styles present and the lyrics leave no doubt about where the group is coming from. “God Knows Where You Are” is a song of encouragement while “You Are Holy” is a nice subdued worship song. I do wonder what my feminist-scholar friends would think of the group’s mantra “Real Music for Real Women” and some of their slightly sultry promo-pics. As a media scholar, it’s always interesting to see what make-up, lighting and camera angle can do. And if it’s meant for women, I guess I don’t get to play this disk any more. I hope Beloved doesn’t sell themselves short. - Rob S. |
