Above The Golden State
Self-titled
Sparrow Records
Grade – B

Being that the self-titled album from Above The Golden State was a debut, I was nicely surprised. I have never really liked the praise pop rock style of music before, yet I found myself enjoying the album.

The lyrics certainly fulfill the band’s aim as according to the front man, Michael Watson, “Music is from God and for God. And I believe God is raising up a new generation of young musicians who want to see music being used for its original purpose – to glorify God. Our first desire is to serve the Lord in everything we do.” The three-piece band is based in Portland, Oregon. Each member has at one time or another partnered with everyone from Telecast to Falling Up to Kutless.

The songs that stick out the most are all of the slower song such as “Love,” “Scared,” “Real To Reel,” and “The Haunting.” Listen for the great string arrangement on from “Real To Reel.”
