“Duke and the Great Pie War” is the 25th installment of the popular Veggie Tales line of videos. This time around perpetual characters, Larry the cucumber and Bob the tomato continue their Biblical adventures in an adventure inspired by the story of Ruth and Naomi. “Duke”, played by Larry, falls in love with the beautiful rhubarb Petunia. Petunia recently fled her home land of Rubarb with her mother-in-law Nona (Madam Blueberry) to the Kingdom of Scone. Duke, inspired by Petunia’s kindness, risks his life to protect Petunia from the citizens of Scone and learns a lesson about thinking of others first. The story of Duke and Petunia is very cute, and the carnival like competition including pie-jousting between Duke and Otis the Elevated plays out quite comically. In the end, as always, the guys talk out their lessons-learned (Romans 12:10) with Qwerty. Other features on the DVD include a short story of family devotion called “Baby Sitter in De-Nile”, which is framed around the story of Miriam and Moses. “Baby Sitter in De-Nile” is a colorful tale with only one fault, that being the annoying valley-girl language of the Egyptian princess. Luckily, it’s a short story and it ends quickly after the introduction of the character. As is customary during the intermission, Larry entertains with a silly song. This time Larry sings the blues with Blind Lemon Lincoln. For those parents who have, or are, bringing a new sibling into the house, the short story of the “Baby Sitter in De-Nile” is an appropriate message of the trials and sacrifices the older siblings will endure. The full feature of “Duke and the Great Pie War” also does well to portray devotion and brotherly love. - Ken W. |
