Denver and the Mile High Orchestra
“Live at Long Hollow”
Reel Loud Records
2-disk DVD

DenverI’ve seen DMHO in concert twice and this set manages to capture the group’s uplifting and entertaining show. For those not in-the-know, this is Christian big band music, with a touch of swing and Dixieland.

Lead singer Denver Bierman, resplendent in his trademark red suit, is an excellent vocalist, singing scat on “Act the Scat” and leading an accapella version of “Can’t Get Enough.”

“Get Down” is described as a “head-bopping groovy” song that has the audience on its feet, while the traditional hymn “Crown Him Lord of All” retains its familiarity. “Christ the Solid Rock” has been sung a million times in church but not quite like this.

The band, I should say orchestra, is very tight and exhibits outstanding showmanship, the result of playing over 100 concerts a year.

The disk of extras has a pleasing two-song acoustic set while the 25-minute interview with Denver is a very revealing portrait of perseverance; what started out as a hobby has turned into a life’s calling. The behind-the-scenes segment, with its out-of-control camera wasn’t too insightful and the director’s booth portion reveals that the concert is indeed a pinch over directed at times.

Those quibbles aside, this is good clean fun that the whole family can enjoy.

Highly recommended.
