Veggie Tales Gideon – Tuba Warrior Big Idea
The latest Veggie Tales episode tells the story of Gideon from the Old Testament times. This is a great story of courage and trust as God uses Gideon, the youngest and smallest of his family, to lead “God’s Army,” as it is portrayed in the video, against the Midianites and Amalekites (or the “hairy pickles”).
The veggie-version uses clever parodies and witty anecdotes to get each lesson across. I was delighted to see another straight out Bible story in light of the fact that NBC has asked Veggie creators to edit out most references to God to be aired on the network. With this particular episode, there would not be a whole lot left after placating the network executives.
The parodies of the marching band, drinking “brain-freezing” slushies, and the cunning pokes about vegetables (particularly talking vegetables) are hilariously funny. The creativity of each episode is becoming more and more enjoyable. The lessons of faith and trust are also a major plus as young children are being prepared to face a world of doubt and disbelief. Lastly, thumbs up to the creators for giving props to the Gideon organization (in their own comedic way).
Synopsis VeggieTales Gideon: Tuba Warrior is the incredible story of one of the greatest biblical heroes of all time – the unassuming Gideon, played by the esteemed Larry the Cucumber, is chosen by God to defend his people against an army of 30,000 excessively hairy pickles! However, the reluctant, tuba-playing Gideon is better trained at marching in formation than he is at marching into battle. Will he be able to trust the message delivered to him by the angel (Pa Grape) and protect his people? Accompanied by a mere six carrots and six peas, will Gideon be able to stand against an army of thousands? Discover a tale of courage and trusting God based on Proverbs 3: 5-6 in the all-new VeggieTales adventure…Gideon: Tuba Warrior!
As a special bonus, Gideon: Tuba Warrior also features the heart-warming story of George Mueller, a man who trusted God for everything, starring Archibald Asparagus in the lead role. See how George's unshakable trust in God fed his entire house time and again, even when circumstances appeared to be hopeless.
